Graduate Student Creates Website Timeline of Missions in China
Olivet School of Art and Design graduate students are expected to complete final projects that can help propel Christian Missions.
For graduate student Yanhuan Zheng, she is currently working on a final design project that can support this generation of Christian Missionaries to understand the history of the gospel. Her inspiration draws from past and present missionaries who are spreading the gospel. She researched on the history of China’s mission field and interviewed the young adult Christians, whose parents served as missionaries in the 1950’s.
“I hope this project can encourage the new generation of Christians to better understand and appreciate the history and gospel’s heralded identity,” said Zheng. “The website can provide Christians a chance to study their ancestor’s volition when facing difficulties. It can also help them know that they can always rely on God to become His useful servant.”
Her website will contain visualized info graphics combined with usability to help guide visitors through the timeline of Chinese Missions. Zheng chose 10 missionaries for this project to study from. First was the arrival of Robert Morrison, which served as the beginning point of Protestantism in China. Other figures include William Milne who was the first Principal of Anglo-Chinese College, and chief editor of First Chinese Monthly Magazine. James Hudson Taylor opened China’s Inland Mission to serve the unreached people. Timothy Richard impacted society and culture through academy and media.
Zheng will primarily base the project looking at the history of Protestantism in China beginning from England missionary Robert Morrison’s arrival.
“They proclaimed the Gospel, shepherded many lost souls, and helped to develop indigenous Chinese church movements,” explained Zheng when asked what focus she’ll primarily work on. “They devoted to make Christianity easy to accepted by Chinese culture, and Bible value easy to accommodated with social and political reformation.”
Zheng will co-work with other Christian websites to help promote her completed graduate project website, which is expected to be completed in June this year.
